![]() Choosing a Tarot deck can be a fun and exciting process. There are thousands of choices out there, truly something for almost everyone. So once you find a deck you love, what’s the best way to get to know it? Enter the deck interview spread: a set of questions designed to open a conversation with your cards, offering insight to their many features and talents. You can find a variety of versions online (and I’ve included other links below); I’ve adapted this one from Interviewing Your Tarot Decks by Mat Auryn. In honor of the season, our sample spread today will feature the Halloween Tarot by Kipling West, available here at Indigo Moons! The questions, explained 1. What are your strengths? Allow the deck to highlight its own best features, which will help you choose when to use it. Maybe it’s good at validation, or better at revealing what’s hidden; perhaps its art is inspiring or its simplicity leaves room for your intuition. 2. What are your limits? This will help you decide if the deck is the right one for a certain question, or when it may be best to use a different one - for example, a deck that’s great at examining fine details may not be ideal for big-picture situations. 3. What is your “voice” - what tone will your readings have? This speaks to your deck’s personality: is it bold and direct, gentle and comforting, funny and quirky? Will you get tough love or warm hugs from its advice? 4. What makes you unique? While all Tarot decks have a structure in common, each one has its own individuality. This will tell you what you will see in this deck that is different from any other. 5. What type of readings will you do best? Combined with the other questions, this will direct you on when and how to use your deck, as compared to others. Some decks prefer to “speak” only to their owner, while others are happy helping others; your cards may love to help you see the future, or work best for examining your emotions. ![]() Interview: The Halloween Tarot Created by Kipling West and published by U.S. Games, the Halloween Tarot features a vintage cartoon style and a mood that’s both gothic and festive. It’s based on the iconic Rider-Waite-Smith deck, with most cards almost an exact interpretation of the originals. This is a sweet, fun deck that’s great for Halloween lovers, and younger clients might particularly enjoy it for their readings. To suit the theme, the suit of Pentacles (Earth) has become Pumpkins; Cups (Water), Ghosts; Swords (Air), Bats; and Wands (Fire), Imps. In the interest of time and space, I asked only the first three questions, but I recommend going more in-depth with your own personal interviews. Here’s what the Halloween Tarot had to say about itself. 1. What are your strengths? Knight of Imps: An energetic, idealistic energy that’s strongly focused on action. Positive intentions and fast-moving, though sometimes unreliable. The Halloween Tarot has a lighthearted design, and this card highlights those particular strengths. The deck will go well with simple, fun questions; because Fire is associated with fast movement, it might also be especially great for predictions about the immediate future. 2. What are your limits? Ten of Bats: A painful, inevitable ending; betrayal, deceit, working through shadows. As we might expect, this card is almost the exact opposite of the strengths. This Ten is focused on difficult times and serious concerns, while the Halloween Tarot has a whimsical, easygoing outlook. Look to another deck for your deeper questions, and save this one for a party with friends. 3. What is your voice? Nine of Pumpkins: The good life and simple pleasures - beauty, abundance, and relaxation. Indulge and enjoy yourself! Costumes, candy, and other little luxuries are what a modern Halloween is all about. The Halloween Tarot will speak to you with calm and chill, offering gentle guidance while letting you fill in the blanks. It’s here to be a cute companion - maybe even a great gift for a Halloween lover!
